Self-esteem refers to how you value and perceive yourself. It's based on your opinions and beliefs about yourself and is also thought of as self-confidence. It influences the degree to which you feel worthy, valuable and confident about yourself and your decisions.

If you have low self-esteem and a lack of confidence, you may feel doubtful of your abilities or what you have to offer which often contributes to experiences of anxiety, social fears, depression, perfectionism and other mental health struggles. Signs of low self-esteem include an intensely critical inner voice, feelings of overall dissatisfaction with life, or difficulty pursuing the things you like to do.

The factors that affect our self-esteem are different for everyone. Some examples of things in life that may contribute to low self-esteem are; being bullied or abused, experiencing prejudice, discrimination or stigma, losing your job or difficulty finding employment, work or academic problems, physical or mental health problems, relationship problems, social beauty standards, feeling pressured to meet unrealistic expectations by others or setting unrealistic goals for yourself.
